Why Ingredient Awareness Matters
Petroleum jelly, artificial fragrance, artificial dyes, and alcohol are ingredients found in mostly every major lip balm product, are they truly healthy for your skin? Yet they are all labeled as being “hydrated” or “safe” for your skin, the ingredients do the opposite. When choosing a lip balm, it’s crucial to understand what you are applying to your lips, considering some ingredients can be harmful or irritating. Skin on the lips is very thin and sensitive, making it more prone to irritation or absorption of harmful substances. To be aware of the ingredients on your lips, is to be aware of your health.
Petroleum Jelly: The “Moisture Myth” Trap
Petrolatum, otherwise known as Petroleum jelly, is one of the most common ingredients in lip balms. It’s often marketed to be a powerful moisturizer that “locks in” hydration. Petroleum jelly is refined and contains PAH’s, potentially harmful compounds linked to irritation. What people have come to realize is that it doesn’t hydrate your lips, it forms a barrier on top of the skin. The barrier can prevent moisture loss temporarily, but it blocks the lips from breathing and stops water from entering from the outside. Petroleum jelly does nothing to fix the underlying problem, which can create a frustrating cycle where your lips are soft and moisturized, then chapped again.
Artificial Fragrance: The Hidden Irritant
Artificial fragrance might make lip balms smell pleasant, but they often contain a mix of unknown chemicals that will irritate your lips in the long run. The chemicals inside of artificial fragrances cause dryness, redness, or allergic reactions, especially if you have sensitive skin. The label “fragrance” can hide many ingredients, therefore it’s a mystery to know what you’re truly applying to your lips. Opting for fragrance-free lip balms, or those scented naturally with essential oils is a safer option.
Alcohol: The Sneaky Moisture Thief
Some lip balms use alcohol to make the product feel light or give a cooling effect, but these types of alcohol can actually dry out your lips. Ingredients like ethanol or isopropyl alcohol strip away your lips’ natural oils, leaving them even more chapped, reaching for your lip balm again. It’s common to mistake the feeling as tingly or hydrating, but it’s truly a sign of irritation. When choosing a lip balm, look for a product that has no drying alcohols in order to keep your lips healthy, smooth, and hydrated.
